Sabbath Brothers

Not your usual bible study

The “Sabbath Brothers Fellowship” is a nondenominational Bible Study of Christians from various churches that began in 1992. Each year, the Sabbath Brothers read through the Old and New Testaments by reading portions every day following the Gideons International Reading Calendar.

Listed below are core characteristics that make Sabbath Brothers unique:

Every Day with Our Lord: It is better to miss a reading than to read ahead; by reading ahead, the day without time with the Lord is premeditated. The Sabbath Brothers prioritize our daily time with the Lord and read His Word with the intent of communing with Him each day. Each day in Scripture brings a unique message from the Lord. (Joshua 1:8; Psalm 1:2, 119:97; Exodus 16:15-21 John 6:32-35; John 17:17)

Opening Our Homes: Each Sunday between 6:30-8:00am, the Sabbath Brothers get together in a home to discuss the Scripture passages from the past week as we pray and worship the Lord together. We also get together at various times during the month to pray and serve together. (Acts 2:2, 46, 5:42; Romans 16:5; 1 Corinthians 16:19; Colossians 4:15; Philemon 1:2)

Annual Faithful Commitment: Each year, Sabbath Brothers choose whether to faithfully commit that year to the reading of Scripture. Sabbath Brothers can choose to leave after December 31 of any year. For that year, the Sabbath Brother does not give themselves a choice as to daily Scripture reading or attending together on Sunday morning (unless sick or traveling). (Matthew 25:23; Deuteronomy 17:18-20; 1 Corinthians 4:2, 10:31; Revelation 2:10)

Godly Options: SB’s don’t give ourselves options that don’t exist; if something is clearly against God’s will, it is not even a consideration to choose against. So much time and energy is wasted on mulling over decisions that should not even be options. (Joshua 24:15, Deut. 30:19-20, 1 Corinthians 10:31)

Hearts of Change: Sabbath Brothers have gentle hearts desiring to change according to God’s Word. We accept “Failure Testimonies” (Proverbs 3:12) – God often leads His people to surprising blessings through the failures of our lives. This is beyond regular testimonies when God worked everything out for us to succeed. (Luke 11:28, 24:45; Psalm 119:18; Isaiah 1:19; Philippians 2:13; 2 Corinthians 9:7; Romans 2:13; James 4:17; Hebrews 3:13; 1 Thessalonians 2:13; 2 Peter 2:21)

Intercessory Prayer: A prayer sheet containing requests and praises are shared every week for updates regarding the personal lives of the Sabbath Brothers. The group shares burdens and praises for each Sabbath Brother. (James 5:16; Ephesians 6:18; 1 Timothy 2:1; Romans 15:30; 1 Samuel 12:23)

Positive Gossip: We purposefully  use gossip by praising a brother when he is not present. (Ephesians 4:29, 1 Thessalonians 5:11, Romans 12:21)

Active Service: Sabbath Brothers are involved in a variety of ministries including local churches, jail ministries, convalescent homes, orphan work, Gideons International, 360Serve and other areas that share God’s Word with the world. (2 Timothy 2:4; 1 John 3:18; Matthew 9:38, 28:16-20; Romans 12:5-6; John 12:26; 1 Corinthians 12:5)

Bible Centered Beliefs: Sabbath Brothers sincerely seek the Lord through His Word without religious platitudes (that we call “motherisms”). The verse-by-verse notes are a collection of insights from a variety of Christians over a period of time to assist in understanding the supernatural brilliance of God’s Word. (Romans 10:17; Philippians 2:16; 2 Timothy 3:16; 1 Peter 1:25; 2 Peter 1:20)

In short, Sabbath Brothers love God above all things while prioritizing Him, and then share His love with Sabbath Brothers and others. (Matthew 22:36-40)
